Shore power in Hoorn comes online after shaky start

The shore power facilities for river cruise vessels at the Rouaanse jetty on Hoorn’s Oostereiland have been fully functional from late March.

Due to unforeseen problems on a transformer box, however, they became operational with a few days’ delay, preventing a river cruise vessel alighting at Hoorn from using shore power during that period.

The municipality had agreed with residents and the council that no vessels in its harbour would use generators from this season onwards so as to prevent inconvenience to local residents. When the shore power was not available as planned for a vessel arriving on 23 March, the port authority agreed with the captain that it could drop off passengers for their morning tour through the historic city, then leave the port, and return to pick them up again for lunch. For their afternoon excursion by coach, the passengers were again dropped off in the port and the vessel departed once more. Other vessels were able to connect to the shower power later that weekend. Shore power had also been available at the other jetty from the start of the cruise season on 17 March.

The municipality has discussed the events of 23 March with the company operating the cruise vessel and Events Holland, and apologised for the issues. The executive board of the municipality decided to pay back all the mooring and port dues. Both shore power facilities have been working perfectly since then. Not all captains know how shore power works and there are also language problems sometimes, but the Hoorn harbour master expects these problems to be temporary.
